Bringing Back Steel Making

I will bring steelmaking back to Teesside and restore us to our rightful place as a world class steelmaking region again.

Since my election in 2017, I have worked tirelessly to save British Steel and I’m pleased that we have protected a great business and thousands of local jobs. BUT it’s not enough. I am not interested in managing the decline of an essential core industry like steel. I want to see it thrive. I want to see it grow and I want that to happen in Teesside.

Labour failed our area when it closed the steelworks in 2009 when we deserved better. Following the reopening of the steelworks in 2012 it was then allowed to close in 2015, which was a catastrophic mistake and one that has affected workers, families and communities across Teesside ever since.

If re-elected I will bring steelmaking back to Teesside. I have a plan to create a steelmaking facility, in Teesside, that will produce millions of tonnes of steel every year. It will utilise modern technologies making us competitive in a global steel industry. I have a plan for an electric arc furnace to the region, which will be powered by our new green energy. This will future proof the industry in Teesside in a world where we must cut carbon emissions and use innovation and technology to produce the best and greenest steel known to man.

More importantly, it will create thousands of jobs for local people who should be working in our steel industry. Well paid, sustainable, quality jobs that Teesside deserves.
